The Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia was hit by an earthquake of exceptional magnitude, estimated at 8.8 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located 126 km from the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 20.7 km, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS).
